  1. I wasn't here when we chose books, so i just got put into a group. That group was Chinese Handcuffs. I'm happy that i got put into the group, so far the book has been pretty good. The book is kind of all over the place so far, but it's because its introducing all the characters. I have found it enjoyable, its probably the most enjoyable book I've read in a while. I have made a few connections so far to the main character, some good, some bad.

    2. Your book Chinese Handcuffs is kind of similar to the book I'm reading, Running Loose. In your book you said that they introducing a lot of different characters throughout the book and the challenges they are facing during it. In Running Loose they have also been introducing new people and there challenges they are facing as well.

  2. I chose running loose because I really like football and this book involved football so that is what made it appealing. The title and cover of the book is also another reason why it made my top 3 choices. I am happy with my choice so far. Through 52 pages I really have enjoyed the book so far and its a real page turner. I am finding it very enjoyable and interesting to read. I believe I made the best choice and normally I don't like to read but this book is really interesting.

Being around football all during high school really helps me connect with this book and makes understanding it a lot easier.

  4. The book Running Loose was in my top three because it sounded like a good read. I have always liked reading sports books growing up so this one immediately caught my eye. So far I am happy with what I have read, not a lot is going on yet but it hasn't been bland or boring so far. My initial thoughts on the book so far are very good, there is a lot left to the book and I believe it will continue to be good book.

  5. I received the book Stotan! and I am pretty sure it was my third choice. I ranked it third because I'm not much of a swimmer and that is what majority of the book is about, but after reading it so far it has turned out to be a pretty good and entertaining book. So far in the book it has introduced the characters and has given details about them so you can get to know them. It has already given some conflicts which makes it interesting and fun to read. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

    2. I also was given a book that wasn't my top choice. Along with your thoughts on Stotan!, my book Running loose, has introduced some of the main characters along with explaining some of their histories and background's. I am just as excited as you are about how the story develops.

    3. Yes, I am in the same group but when you said it wasn't your top choice I feel the same way because I'm also not a swimmer and like you said that's what this is mostly about. I would also agree about how it has done a good job introducing all the correctors and giving me personally a good understanding of the book so far along with putting the problem right out in the open of them not having a big team and it also being the last year of having a team in general.

    4. i am also in the same group and i didn't think i would like this book because i don't like swimming or know anything about it. the author really knows how to get readers attached by bringing up many conflicts up in the beginning of the book.

  6. I personally wasn't hear when we got to pick our top three books. So when I returned to school I was given the book Stotan so I don't have specific reasons why I chose this book or why it was in my top three choices. So far I am happy with the book, it reads smoothly if you know what I mean. so far I do not connect to it like I thought but even without the connection I still enjoy it so far even if I haven't read a lot of it.

  7. The reason I choose Chinese Handcuffs is because it is about suicide and getting over someone which I relate to. I am very happy with my choice so far. I usually don't understand what I read but I actually understand this book. It does get a little bit confusing at times and a little bit all over the place. This book is very enjoyable and interesting as I want to keep on reading. I'm making connections with Dillon because he is getting over someone.

  8. The book I'm reading is Running Loose, it was my #1 choice on my list. I chose this book because the overall theme was appealing and the reviews that people posted said the book was very relatable and was an amazing read. I'm a little over 50 pages in and the book is great so far. It's very relatable, especially the setting of the book being in a small town in Idaho. The book reminds me a lot of Epworth and the small towns here in Iowa and the high school experience, which I feel is shown very well through Louie's friendships. So far, I'm enjoying the book.

  11. I am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. This book was in my top three choices simply because I didn't have any strong preferences about any of the books. They all sounded like they were semi-interesting just because they deal with some interesting topics, but it just seemed like the way they were being presented wasn't the best. It just seemed like Chris Crutcher was trying to put sports in places where they didn't necessarily need to be. However, upon reading more of the book, I have to admit I don't mind it. So far, the characters seem mostly realistic, which is always nice, because then the book doesn't seem far-fetched. The book isn't fast-paced and action-packed, but reading it seems to go by pretty quick which is a little surprising for what it is. Chris Crutcher seems to have made the main character's mother weirdly sexualized amongst him and his friends. No deeply personal connections have been made, but given the way the book is written, the characters all seem fairly real and somewhat relatable to a high school audience.

    2. I agree with what you're saying and had some of the same thoughts as well before starting to read Running Loose. Chris Crutcher in my opinion, did an amazing job of incorporating sports in his books without it taking over the entire plot and I've come to enjoy Running Loose so far.

  12. The reason that I choose the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes is because it seemed the most interesting to me out of all four choices. This book compared to the others is about mental health and I enjoy reading about mental health. I am happy with my choice so far. The book gets a little confusing when they switch back from now and middle school while telling stories but is overall pretty good. I find the reading enjoyable and interesting although I do think the relationship between Eric's (the narrator) friend Ellerby and Eric's mom because he made weird comments towards her.

  13. The reason I chose my book, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, is because the name stuck out to me and I was curious as to what the book was about. It sounded like it would be a good read and so far it hasn't disappointed me. Although it is kind of a strange book with some of the things said by some of the characters, Eric and his friend Ellerby. They made weird comments about Erics mom and i found it strange but overall so far I am enjoying this book and I have not made any connections yet either but as I read I'm sure I will.

  14. The reasons behind why I chose to read "Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes" is because the overall idea behind both the book and the title seemed interesting/intriguing to me. Eric, the narrator who is a swimmer, views himself as an outcast just like the other = main character in the title, Sarah Byrnes. Sarah Byrnes is a girl Eric is close friends with who has burn scars dating all the way back to when she was a little kid. She spilled boiling water on herself when she was younger, and her dad only got the bare-minimum procedure done for her to survive. So far, I am happy that I chose to read this book because of the interesting/unique idea behind the story. So far the book is enjoyable, and I can make connections to Eric through his experiences doing massive pool workouts for swimming. I can relate since I have done massive run, sometimes up to 13 miles, for Cross Country practice. This book is a great read so far, and I have no regrets choosing it.

This book having football in it was a big reason why I wanted to choose it as my first selection.

  16. I picked Stotan! because the book sounded interesting to me. It was in my top three choices because it is a book about solo sports and friends. I have a slight connection to myself and the book. I am in a solo sport which is track, and in them you have teammates that you make bonds with and you push each other to get better but in the end it is just you who wins or loses. I have liked the book so far. One thing that stands out is how the group's personalities are so diverse. I think this book will be a good read.

  19. I picked the book Stotan! because I found the concept pretty intriguing, with being on a co-op swim team because WD only has about 4-6 swimmers each year I was hoping that I would find the book relatable. So far I am enjoying the book and I am finding it kind of relatable as well with the swimming concept of it. The storyline does seem to be moving pretty slowly but I feel like it will speed up. 20. I chose the book Running Loose as my number one choice because it interested me the most, although I don't completely understand football I enjoy watching it. 26. The reason why I chose Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes because thought some subjects in the book might be relatable to me. I have never been popular, and I used to be picked on. Also, I was intrigued to figure out why Sarah Byrnes was in the hospital and how she got her burn scars. So far, I am happy with the book I chose. The book is engaging and keeps me wanting to turn the page, even when the subject gets a little heavy. The main character's humor, wit, and sarcasm is entertaining. However, I do think the constant witty jokes get old and make the book less entertaining when it is constantly being used.

Since I was gone last week, I have not been able to read much and am curious if I to will feel as though I am over his humor in the next little book. While reading this, it sounded interesting because I always thought people who did that were insanely strong and had a great drive. This book was my second pick overall, and so far it's quite interesting, but I'm only at the start of the book. It's also mainly about mental health, which both characters share. I personally have no relation to this, but I still thought it was very interesting to read. Some crazy incidents occurred at the start of the book, so I'm thinking this will be an interesting read.

Eric because he is overweight kids tease him about his size and for Sarah its because of the burn scars on her face. But they support each other and they are friends but Eric is worried about Sarah because she is now in a hospital and has stopped speaking to people. 1. I agree with picking Stotan for a shorter read also because the larger books i would never finish and i would not ever want to finish them if i was halfway through the book, that's why i like the shorter reads as well.

  32. I was not here when we chose the books, however I ended up with the book staying fat for Sarah Byrnes. I do think that this book would have been an interesting choice however because I am not a big fan of sports so Chinese Handcuffs would not have been my book of choice. I think that running loose also would not have been the best book for me either because of the football content and my lack of knowledge in football. This book is intriguing for me because I did not know anything about the book prior to being assigned to the book, but the title is definitely an attention grabber. I think that this book is definitely interesting and did not start the way that I anticipated. I was wondering if he would be decent on the swim team and definitely did not expect him to be as good at it as he is. I also am very curious about the relationship between Sarah Byrnes and what it will develop into throughout the course of the book. I am struggling though to keep the time frame straight and understanding the change of perspectives.

    1. I have to agree with the attention-grabbing title of Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. That is half of the reason I chose the book, which I do not think I mentioned in my initial blog. I also agree, I am not a big fan of sports either, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes felt more about the characters and relationships than swimming. Running Loose was my first option because the topics sounded less heavy, but I agree too, I know nothing about football.

  33. I chose Chinese Handcuffs as my book because it had the most interesting and compelling themes to me, and while i don't relate to any of the sports featured in any of the book choices available for this month, I do relate to the conflict of grief and how it sticks with you and invades your thoughts. I haven't started the book just yet and i don't know much beyond the synopsis because I've been absent but I'm excited to see what relationships arise between Dillon and other characters and how he'll choose to deal with the grief of his brother and more about what lead to that conflict in the first place.

    1. I can relate to how none of the sports themes appealed to me, as I cannot personally relate to any sports. So, it was a hard decision for me to make initially since every book had some sort of sport attached to it.

    2. I can relate to Quinn and Alexis just because I don’t relate to the Sports part of the book just by reading the back of the book, it seems like a more interesting book and some of the others after I looked at the rest of the books, even though I was placed in this group and didn’t get to pick my book

  34. I chose the book Running Loose because it's about football and it's always been a big part of my life. The book doesn't have anything going on right now but I relate to the setting of playing football in a small town. I relate to Louie because he works hard and knows what he wants in life. I think this book will be interesting to read because of the problems Louie has to deal with.

  35. i was given the book Stotan so far i like the book and the sense of family between the characters. one thing i have noticed so far is that most of the characters have a difficult family background like lions loss of his parents, norties abuse at home, and walkers difficulty with his brother

    1. I agree with Kobe that the part about the race is a good opener because it might get a lot of people attention from the very beginning of the book

  37. I wasn't in class when we chose the books, so i was assigned Chinese Handcuffs once I got back. Even though I didn't have a choice, I read the first 25 pages and so far it seems very interesting. The book introduces Dillion and his friend Jennifer, who seems to deal with big struggles. The book already feels like it will focus on real-life problems and relationships between people. From what i've read so far, I think the story has a good story line and it makes me curious about what will happen to the characters later in the story.

  39. I wasn’t here when we got to chose the books so I was just placed into the Chinese handcuffs group and I will admit it is a very slow moving book so far and that it isn’t the most interesting book so far I am not completely mad that I got placed into this group because it talked about having a race in the very beginning and that’s definitely something that caught my eye at first

  40. I came into the class late and was not able to select my book, however, the book that was assigned to me was Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. So far, the book has been very interesting and has kept me on my toes while reading it. The book is relatable and very engaging, especially with the mystery that surrounds Sarah Byrnes. Through the first 100 or so pages I would say the best part of this book are how realistic the characters feel and the way that people judge others just like in real life based on how they look.
