Blog Response #2

Choose a character from your book.  How do you envision this character?  Use your words to describe how this character looks, acts, and behaves.  Also, discuss the impact this character has had on the story up to this point. Would you be friends with this character, or would you avoid him/her?  Why? What role does this character play in your book?  If this character was not in the book, would the book change?  Why or why not??  (Remember to give  specific details  and a complete blog entry, and  don't forget to comment on  two  other blog entries!   Happy Blogging! :)

  1. The character I choose is Dillon. I feel like Dillon is a young boy with a big heart. I feel that he tries to put on a cover that nothing gets to him, but deep down he is very sensitive and emotional. Dillon has impacted the story a ton. Dillon is the narrator in the story as well as the main character. When his brother killed himself, he would write letters to his brother. I feel like I would be friends with him to an extend. I wouldn't be his best friend but I would still talk to him here and there. If he wasn't in the book, the book would change a lot because He is the main character and going through his brothers suicide.

    1. I also chose Dillion. I agree that he seems like someone with a big, caring heart. Even though he tries and acts like things don't bother him, you can still tell he is dealing with a lot after what happened with Preston. I also think that's what makes him an interesting main character because it shows how people cope with difficult situations in many ways.

    2. i agree, dillion has been caring and seems emotional about his brother taking his own life.

  2. The character Dale in Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes is one i had strong feelings about since he first came up in the book. he's unambitious, rude, and kinda pathetic. He in junior high pointed out what he believed, Sarah's story about how she got face burns is a false claim. He's short but extremely well built, not very smart but makes up for it with physical strength. the only thing that is organized in his life is his backyard toolshed/autoshop. He's known for remembering people by derogatory terms and names, acting as a mild antagonist turned unexpected ally. As a person who in the past has been a target for bullying in a school setting I would likely be one of his junior high targets if i were to be in the story, hence i would make an attempt to avoid confrontation as much as possible.

    1. I agree! Dale is kind of an odd character in the book, but I could definitely see him as a bully type of character.

  3. I am reading the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. A valuable character from this book is Sarah Byrnes. Sarah was burned by her father. He stuck her head in a wood burn stove, and covered the story up by saying a pot of spaghetti fell on her. We do not know anything about her mom or really anything about her childhood besides her dad burning her and being bad. At this point in the book Sarah is in a mental hospital because she stopped talking, and showing any expression. I would most likely be friends with her or friendly to her because I know she feels left out. If she was not in the book, the book would probably be really short because the story is based around her. If she was not in it, it would be about Eric CAT class, and swim practice.

    1. I agree with your statement that the book would be very short without Sarah although I wonder if they would instead focus the story of either Ellerby or Brittain and take the perspective of his competition. I also read the part saying that her face was placed on the wood stove. I am left wondering if this is truly what happened or not, and if it was if that was brought forward and made her go silent or what actually led to her going mute and not talking.

    2. I most definitely agree! I honestly can't picture the book without Sarah Byrnes because she plays such a big role in the book that her name is in the title. I could not imagine the book without her due to the story mostly revolving around her. The story would also be fairly boring as you stated without her in it, and would ultimately only revolve around Eric and swimming.

  4. In the book, "Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes" one of the main characters or the main character Sarah seems like a very strong person and keeps to herself mostly. She can be described as a loner, probably because nobody wants to be around her because of her burns all over her body, people think she's weird. Although people think she's weird you say something about her image, she'll let you know about it, Sarah is a very out-spoken person and isn't afraid to tell people what's on her mind especially when they say things that are just plain mean. Without Sarah as the main character in this book, the book would have to be completely different. I mean it would have to be basically a different book if she was not in it.

    1. I agree that Sarah is a very strong character in Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. Even though people judge her because of her burns, she stands up for herself and speaks her mind. Sarah doesn’t let others control how she feels about herself. Without her, the story would be very different because she plays such an important role in the book.

    2. I fully agree with you and yes the book would be completely different just because she is the main character the book is centered around hence the name of the book.

    3. I agree that Sarah definitely comes off as strong and not afraid to speak her mind, even if people judge her. I also think there’s more going on with her than she shows, which makes her really important to the story.

  5. From my book Stotan! I am choosing the character Nortie. I envision Nortie as a quiet kid who keeps his head down and minds his own business during school but when he is around his friends he opens up a little more. I think this because of his life at home with his dad who abuses him. The impact Nortie has on the book so far is that for Walker is worried about him I think because of his brother who committed suicide. I think that Walker is worried about him because he doesn't want Nortie to do the same. I think that if this character was not in the book it would change a little bit but not juristically. I think this because if they replaced him with a different character they would kind of do the same thing as him with maybe a different homelife or there would be only three swimmers.

    1. I think Nortie is a vital character in the book Stotan!, I feel like if I never knew about him, it wouldn't change the book that much, but now after reading about how the group of friends stood up for Nortie and his mom, I think that it shows the personality that Chris is trying to portray for the readers because for a couple of high school students to stand up to a man like Nortie's dad is a super bold, strong, heroic move and personality trait.

    2. The character Dillion in my book is the same way, he is shy around outsiders. But when around friends he really opens up.

  6. Nortie in Stotan is a big, strong guy, but he acts really gentle and quiet because of the stuff he deals with at home. He’s kind and tries hard to be a good person, even when things are rough for him. He affects the story a lot because his problems bring the team closer and make everything feel more serious and real. I think I’d be friends with him because he seems loyal and caring. If he wasn’t in the book, it would change a lot, since his story helps show what being a Stotan really means.

    2. Nortie in Stotan! kind of seems like Sarah from Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes because she also goes through a lot in her life. Even though people judge her because of her burns, she stays strong and doesn’t let others push her around. Like Nortie, her struggles make the story feel more real and show how strong a person can be when life is difficult.

    3. Nortie sounds like he shares a lot in common with Louie in the book Running Loose. He shares those same traits, he's a very strong and kind person while also being an amazing football player. Louie tries hard to stick to his morals and what he feels is right, which sounds a lot like Nortie.

  7. In the book Chinese Handcuffs, i envision Preston to have a some what charming face, a little shorter and scrawny but still handsome. He acts very carelessly since his accident, and he behaves like a felon. He's had a very big impact on the story since the story is about his brother coping with him commiting suicide. I don't think i would be his friends just because he's really big into drugs and doing stupid stuff. If he was not in the book it would change the story completely. Mainly because it's about him so his brother wouldn't be coping with his loss.

    1. I think that the character Nortie and your character Preston relate to each other. I think this because both of their brothers committed suicide. Nortie has coped with the loss of his brother since it happened when he was younger but I'm sure they were going through the same emotions when both of them happened.

      Delete
    2. I agree that Preston has a big impact on the story. Even though he is not the main character, what happens with him affects Dillon a lot and changes his view on life. I also think the situation shows how people try and cope with serious life changing things that happen to them and the different affects people have. I also would not be friends with Preston for the same reasons.

      Delete
    3. Preston and Nortie are kinda the same because both got a lot of pain inside them. They make the people around them deal with hard stuff and feelings. Preston’s death messes up his brother, and Nortie’s problems make the Stotans worry about him too. Without them, both stories wouldn’t hit as hard or mean as much.

    5. I also agree. Preston isn't the main character, but he and Dillon have shared their whole lives together. I wouldn't be friends with Preston either, based on the drug use.

    6. I did not chose preston but he was my second option because of his story and it adds more to the book seeing how his family and friends reacted to his death and hearing their stories. if preston wasnt in the book it would definetly be completly different.

  8. From my book Running Loose, I'm choosing the character Louie. Louie is strong and a great football player, he is very fast and the kindest guy in the entire school. Louie is the main character so the story is starting to revolve around him, he just quit their football team that hasn't lost in three years which is stirring up his entire small town. I think I would be friends with Louie, he seems like the kind of guy I would want to be around, he always spends time with his friends, he is nice to everyone he meets and he helps his family with anything they need.

    1. I agree with what you said about Louie. He really does seem like a great football player but also a really good person. I also think it was a big deal when he quit the football team since they hadn’t lost in three years and everyone in the town cared about it. It kinda shows how willing he is to stand up for what he believes in, even if it causes problems. I’d probably want to be friends with him too because he seems loyal and cares about his friends and family.

    2. Dillion in my book is also a very good athlete. He is a great runner, but he doesn't do any sports i high school, but he does run marathons

  9. One character from the book Stotan that stands out to me is Walker Jones. I imagine Walker as a strong, athletic high school swimmer who looks pretty fit because of all the training. Since he spends so much time practicing and pushing himself physically, I see him as tall, muscular, and tired from workouts. I think I would probably be friends with Walker. He seems loyal and supportive of his friends, and he doesn’t give up when things get hard. Even though he might be intense, he still seems like someone who cares about the people around him. Walker has a big impact on the story because the book is told from his perspective. Through him, we see how the swim team goes through extremely tough training and learns lessons. He also helps show how each of the swimmers deals with their personal struggles outside of the pool.so yes if the book lost him i feel as if the book wouldn't be a thing.

    1. I definitely agree with how you feel about Walker, I think that he is very loyal to his friends and along with that, pushes them and himself to and past their limits. I believe that without Walker, even if the story was told from another characters perspective, that this book would be completely different because he is truly one of the character's with the strongest personalities, he is not afraid to speak his mind and stand up for what is right.

    2. I also agree with how you feel he is very loyal. i think that that friend group wouldnt last without him. He has does have a very strong personality witch makes the good guy that he his.

    3. Walker relates a lot to Carter in the book Running Loose. Carter is the main character's friend, but adds a lot to the book and wouldn't be the same without him. He's a very strong built guy and an amazing football player as well. Even in the toughest of times, Carter still manages to compartmentalize, stay calm and move forward.

    4. I feel like Walker in your book is similar to Sarah in my book. Sarah is loyal to her very few friends although she is reserved. Sarah also does not give up like Walker in your book, and the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes would not be much of a book if Sarah was not in it like Walker in Stotan.

  10. The character i chose is Nortie. I envision Nortie as a guy on the smaller side but not necessarily scrawny. He seems like the type to not talk a lot around other people, considering he is even shy around his friends. Nortie is not very confident vocally but when he gets into the pool he shows it. His background of having an abusive home life is highlights the reason he acts with such a timid demeanor. thus far he's impacted the story by being the main one to worry about stotan week and trying hard to train for it and leafing by example not because he is confident but because he is scared of what it might be.

    1. It makes sense that he isn’t very confident around people but shows more confidence when he’s swimming. That kind of reminds me of Louie from Running Loose because even though Louie seems confident as a football player, he also goes through a lot emotionally and has to deal with difficult situations. Both characters show that even athletes can have struggles to.

  12. One of the main characters in Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes is Eric. Eric is a high school student that has always been overweight, however this has very rarely bothered him until he started to lose weight making it harder for Sarah Byrnes his best friend to relate to him as they were both outsiders. Eric's behavior is could be described as very competitive in nature, time and time again, Eric strives to beat other people in both swim practice and is driven by the desire to show others up. I also believe that Eric holds a more cowardly behavior, he appears to want to be the person that calls people out and shows others up but is very easily intimidated. Eric's role in this book is the main character that guides the story throughout his life, we are constantly bouncing between his middle and high school experience to learn more about him. If Eric was not in the book, the story would definitely be different as the story would have to pick a new trajectory and new characters. I think that if I was in the same school as Eric I would at first try to be friends with him but eventually it would become a lot on me. I can relate deeply and feel for the outsiders, but I have felt like throughout the book, Eric has caused a lot of drama and his personality may be a little too much or way me down.

    1. I can agree that Eric is a very enjoyable main character. I do think he sometimes displays cowardly behavior, but he seems more confident around those he knows very well. He can say whatever he wants, for the most part, to Sarah Byrnes. He talks to Ellerby about a lot of things. I like his competitive nature because it is a compelling personality trait and even can be considered flawed. I hate when main characters are perfect people who can do no wrong. So that is why I like the fact that Eric is not perfect but he learns to embrace that fact.

      Delete
    2. I agree, Eric is a very enjoyable character and though he seems to act like a scared puppy most times, he has become very witty because of being friends with Sarah Byrnes for so long as well as being bullied for his weight. So he knows how to make a comeback.

  13. I am reading the book Stotan! And the character I pick in Elaine. Elaine really stands out to me because she seems like a super cool girl who knows how to stand her ground. I envision her as every other girl kind of, and although Walker talks about how pretty she is, part of me thinks that maybe she isn’t all that, but her personality is what attracts him to her the most. Elaine has not had a huge impact on the story so far, but she is an ongoing character. The main character, Walker, has/had a huge crush on her and she is also one of the characters in the boys' friend group. I feel like I definitely would be friends with her, she seems super cool and the main thing that made me really like her was when she stood up for herself in the diner when one of the boys from the high school claimed that she slept with him and she got up and embarrassed him because it was a lie. Elaine acts as the character who always makes me smile or laugh when bad stuff is going on. I don’t think the book would change a whole lot without Elaine in it, but having her character definitely helps the female crowd enjoy reading the book a little more.

  14. In Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, besides the two main characters, Eric and Sarah, Dale is one of the other more important characters. He plays a huge role in figuring out what really happened to Sarah Byrnes and how Eric ended up finding out at first. He was also important to Crispy Pork Grinds for a bit before they kicked him out. Dale was described as smaller by Eric. He's not very tall, and he doesn't have much fat on him, but I would imagine that he isn't very muscular either. Just lean, perhaps. I also envisioned Dale to have darker hair, a little messy, and definitely greasy. Dale, in junior high, acted bigger than he may have actually viewed himself. He beat up lots of people to get something or to provide some proof of his toughness. However, as time went on, it seemed that Dale just began to keep to himself. He is also illiterate, he hardly knows how to read. He also has trouble pronouncing some words, likely because he doesn't even know how to read them. Despite how mean and cruel he was in junior high, Dale has a softer side. It was displayed when Eric was talking to him about Sarah Byrnes, and Eric described how he had smiled a bit. In literal terms, I would not be friends with Dale. Especially not in junior high, I would have avoided him at all costs. Because of that, I do not think I would have been able to realistically be friends with him. If Dale were not in the book, Eric would not have known what happened to Sarah Byrnes until she had told him herself. Eric also would have probably died from the stabbing if Dale had not been there. He is an important character, even though he may not have shown up as much as other characters.

    1. I think that your description of Dale is perfect, I am wondering how Dale ended up with as much power in his intimidation to become a bully but I think that that says a lot about his character and the character of others as he is an underdog yet he ended up with many people afraid of him and upset. I also think that I would probably have avoided Dale as his behaviors would have seemed very intimidating and the easiest thing to do would have been to ignore him and pretend that he did not exist. I think that when you are dealing with those type of people it is much easier to try to fly under unnoticed than to be seen and then tried to hide.

    2. I agree with the fact you perceive him as feeling smaller than he really is, looking deeper into that aspect it could be because it's a response to the abuse he endured as a young boy.

  15. The Character I choose was Walker. I think He is the typical lean high school athletic swimmer. He probably has broad shoulders and a swimmer’s build from all the training he does with his team. Since the story focuses so much on intense swim practices, I imagine him usually wearing athletic clothes or team gear, looking tired but determined after long workouts.Walker acts tough on the outside, but inside he is thoughtful and often unsure about things in his life. He is loyal to his friends and takes his commitment to the swim team seriously.

Louie seems like a good guy though since he quit the team because he did not like the coaches way of the game. I feel like Louie is always trying to do the right thing which makes him a good guy. His relationship with Becky is also very important because it shows a softer side of him and helps us see that he cares about others. I would be friends with Louie because he seems like a good caring guy who thinks deeply about his friends and he is always trying to do the right thing. He's a very aggressive and agitated person, I would stay away from him as much as I could. He has also shown his dislike of minorities, wanting to severely injure an opposing team's quarterback not only to get an advantage, but also simply just to hurt him. I am choosing the character Lion from Stotan!, and I see him as a really quiet kid who keeps to himself at school and doesn’t try to stand out, but when he’s around his friends he opens up more and acts like himself. I think this is because of what he deals with at home since his dad is abusive, which probably makes him more closed off around other people. Lion’s impact on the story so far is that Walker is really worried about him, and I think that connects to Walker’s brother who committed suicide, making Walker more protective because he doesn’t want Lion to go through the same thing or make that kind of decision. If Lion wasn’t in the book, I think the story would change a little but not a lot, because they could replace him with a different character who has a similar role, just with a different background, or there would just be three swimmers instead of four.

  27. I chose the character Eric Calhoune as someone who had a major impact on the outcomes of the book, and I say that due to the care he shows for his friend Sarah Byrnes throughout the book. In the book I am reading, Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes, Eric is a friend of Sarah Byrnes. Sarah is abused, and tries to hide the fact from everyone due to the psychotic nature of her father, Virgil Byrnes. However, even though she doesn't want other people to know about her abuse simply due to the worry that her father will lose control and do something drastic, Eric insists that she needs to tell someone about these issues before they get too far out of control. Sarah Byrne's father, Virgil Brynes, is crazy, and Eric plays a very impactful role in the book by helping her let others know about the abuse in order to protect her from her father.

    1. I think Becky relates to Eric because they are both very supportive and play a big role in the book. He seems very kind hearted and supportive, as does Becky.

    2. this sounds similiar to the plot dynamic between jennifer and dillion in the book running lose. Dillion shows care for his abused friend jennifer, after she tells him of the abuse and she has witheld the truth one of the same reasons because her stepdad is a physco and might lash out.

  28. i chose boomer because i invasion him as this tall kind of built like cleary but with a more of a block head face. He definitely has a thick skull probably legs like a tree trunk but he acts like a total child and it shows in the book how he gets abused at home so he takes all the abuse from home and uses it on the kids in his class or anyone he dislikes. boomers inpact is kind of odd becuase he is the one who threw Washington into that bench causeing louie to crashout and quit the team for injustice so with out that i dont know what the book would look like. But i sure as hell would not be friends with boomer he seems completely stupid like cannot think for him self stupid .

  29. The Character I am choosing is Becky Sanders, Becky seems pretty chill, she is really good to Louie while they are dating. She has impacted the book by being a huge part of Louie's life, she is there for him when he needs her most and he is also there for her when she needs him most. Overall she is my favorite due to the reasons I have stated.

    1. I agree with you that Becky is a good person. She seems like a nice person. She is always there for Louie when he needs support through the hard times he is having throughout the book.

    2. I didn't pick Becky but I agree that she seems like a nice person. She's always there for Louie even when he's in the middle of something and has been willing to give up cheerleading so she can be there for him.

    3. I also think Becky is a good person and that it has been a very big part of the book. I also agree that she has been the best part of the book because of her character and the way she carries herself and is there for the people she cares for.

  31. The character I chose was Dillon from Chinese Handcuffs. I feel that Dillon is the kindest and most caring person; he has had a very dark past, and it shapes him as a person as he is in the book. Dillon cares about everyone, but he cares most about the death of his brother that he witnessed close up. He is a loveable person; he cares for Jennifer when she was at the hospital while also caring for Stacy when they went on their ride through the mountains. Dillon, who is the narrator of the story, has impacted the novel through his kindness and perseverance. When his brother died, he would always make stories showing his affection for him. Overall, I would be friends with Dillon; he seems like a very nice and caring dude who would be there for me whenever. If Dillon weren't in this book, it would be weird; Dillon wouldn't have been able to slow down the death of Preston even slightly.

    1. This seems like a very interesting character with a good personality. He seems very kind and caring which would be good for a character to they would be likeable to the reader. He seems to attract a lot of attention from other folks in his life so he must be a very likeable/popular person to be around.

  32. The character I chose is Louie. I envision this character is a 5 foot 10 guy who is pretty athletic and well put together. He acts a respectful, and kind young man that is very caring towards his peers. The impact this character has had in my story so far is be the main character. As the main character, he often talks about his journey which is playing football, hanging with his new girlfriend Becky, working at the bar he works the 2-12 shift at, or just hanging with his friend Carter. I would be good friends with Louie I believe because he loves playing/watching football which I love to do both, he loves sports which I also like as well, and lastly, he seems like a good and chill person to be around. If Louie wasn't present in the book, it would not be entertaining and I'm not quite sure who else the story would be based on besides maybe his friend Carter.

    1. I agree with you and also chose Louie because I think I would get along with him. He is a very caring and kind person so I think we would get along well. I also see him as a tall and athletic guy because of how much he does sports and how hard he works.

  33. The character I chose was Louie. I see him as a tall strong guy with brown curly hair who is very athletic and driven. I see him as a strong relationship guy because of Becky and Carter. He also has a backbone because he doesn't take disrespect from anyone and stands up for his peers. You can tell he is very sports driven and has love for the game of football because of how hard he works. He doesn't just work hard on the field he is determined to get better at pool too. If he was a real person I would be friends with him because of his personality and because we share the same traits, we both have people we care about and will always stick up for and we both love sports. He is a big part of the book and makes it entertaining to read.

    2. my character dillion is simiiar to Louie because they are both very athletic and use their talents in competition. He also has backbone and takes action for the things that he believes in. louie seems like a good friend because of his drive in sports and he sticks up for the people in his life.

  34. the character i chose was Sarah. i see Sarah as a short quiet girl with blonde hair. i think Sarah is a reserved person with very few friends. Sarah is a huge impact on the story because her struggles drive many of the events and influences eric to stand up for what is right. i would want to be friends with her because she seems like a very kindhearted individual just with a lot going on. without Sarah Byrnes the story would lose its main conflict and emotional depth, so the book would be completely different.

  35. I chose Becky and I envision her as a short brunette with long hair. I see her as a bubbly and energetic person because of how she's described in the book. She's always there for Louie during his tough times and has offered to quit cheerleading for him multiple times. She's very supportive and kind which has played a very big part in the book.

  36. The character I chose was Dillion. I see dillion as a caring person who generally keeps his sad emotions to himself expressing them with bad behavior. Dillion tends to act out often, but to people he openly cares about he is there for, he listens to others problems while still dealing with his own. Dillion has been the main impact in this book being the main character and brings the rest of the characters together or into the book. I would talk to him but not be close friends because he tends to get in trouble. If he wasnt in the book it would change a lot because he is the main character explaining everything the happens.

  37. the character i chose was dillion i envision he has an average height around 5 "10 considering his weight and the fact that he competes in marathons he also is probably around 10 percent bodyfat and has a little bit of muscle mass but not much. I envision him as a caring person because of how he responds to Jenifer when she opens up to him and because of the depth he goes into throughout the book with the bond he had with Preston. I think he also acts impulsvily aswell and makes some decisions purely off emotions such as when he went to the bikers bar and started chaos. He has had the most impact on the story most of the book is from his perspective and how he interacts with the other charavcters from his view. I would be friends with him he has a strong personality and cares for the people close to him he is a genuine person who goes through alot and i think he would be a good friend.

  38. I choose the character Dillon he is one of the main characters in the book is the very first character we introduced in and he is a very caring person and sounds like he has a very big heart, but he also goes through a lot of very bad things throughout the first part of the book so far like his brother taking his own life

  39. I picture Sarah Byrnes as really tough because of her scars and how she acts. She is kind of rude sometimes and doesn’t care what people think, but she’s probably hiding a lot inside. She has a big impact on the story because everything kind of revolves around her and Eric. I would be friends with her becuase she’s real and honest. She plays a main role, and without her the story would be completly different and not as meaningful.
