  1. I choose A Thousand Splendid Suns because the main character is a girl and I was thinking that I could understand it more as a girl as the main character. The primary focus is mainly about arranged marrages and how life was back then. Back then it was normal to have multiple wives so they handled it well. It has a very slow start and got confusing a lot of the time. It also for the most part is very boring.

    1. Your book seems very similar to mine. My books marriages are also arranged in order to keep the man's family name strong. My book is also pretty boring so far and I wouldn't be upset if I didn't have to read it anymore.

    2. The beginning is a very slow and not interesting with difficult words and names we don't know how to pronounce correctly or know what they mean. I was excited to read this book thinking it would be a decent read but it is slow and tough.

    3. I agree that the book has been very slow and it has been hard to get into because it has really just been kind of boring to me although there have been some parts that surprised me.

    5. I get what you mean about it being slow at first, but I don’t think it’s mostly boring. The beginning helps build the characters so the later parts matter more.
Also, the book doesn’t really show those marriages as handled well—it shows how hard they were, especially for women.

  2. After reading the first few chapters of, A Thousand Splendid Suns, my thoughts of it are that its kind of boring. I thought it was going to be right into the book and stuff which it kind of is but also it introduces so many characters at once and the new words it uses confuses me. I hope that this book starts to pick up a little more and becomes a little more so i can actually enjoy the reading. The book initially drew me to it because it sounded like a good book but from the rough start of it being slow i don't know if it will pick up or not.

    1. I also am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, and I agree with the fact that the book seemed like it would be a good read, but after reading it, it is boring as of right now. I also hope that the book gets more interesting the more I read, and has more of a fast plot.

    2. I agree with the new words confusing me and not knowing how to say them correctly or them just appearing mid sentence and the different names that are not what we are used to. I also really hope it starts to change and become more interesting because its a little annoying trying to understand and want to continue the book.

    3. I agree with your statement that this book introduces a lot of characters at once, I feel as though the book may read smoother, and be more fast pace had they slowly worked the characters in and really developed each one, or at least the main characters. I think that this book may pick up when we get to part three as Miriam and Laila's characters will be more developed, as well as the characters that go along with them.

    4. I agree that its very boring and it does introduce many characters at once. I wish it went a little faster paste to keep me into it.

    5. yes there were many characters introduced all at once and it became a little much for my liking but I think I know most of them for now but I do really wish it went a faster pace aswell.

    6. I also agree to this. I personally thought at the start it was quite boring, and I didn't want to read much of it. It started to grow on me after learning about Mariam and Rasheed's lives as well as Laila's lifestyle. They all get brought up in the book very quickly, which could be hard to read.

    7. i agree that the beginning was kinda boring, and felt a bit unnecessary at times with all of the information and characters introduced, but as the story goes on, the situation gets alot heavier very quickly. information given in the beginning is also referenced often but can be difficult to keep note of

  3. what drew me into reading Night was not the length of the book, if anything it's just an added bonus. the whole reason I wanted to read this book from the beginning of the trimester is the main topic being the Holocaust. It was an extremely devastating but pivotal time in the world's history of war. proof at how humanity can be so depraved that it could do such awful things to it's own kind. the book itself started off rather slow. introducing us to the main characters and having to honestly do research on Jewish customs and words. however when it did pick up in the pace it was a rapid ascension in speed, likely due to how it happened in reality imitating that in the text of the story.

  4. What really drew me into A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah was the fact that it’s a true story. Knowing that everything actually happened makes it way more interesting compared to a fictional book. I was also interested because it talks about child soldiers, which isn’t something we usually learn about, so it felt like I was going to learn something important while reading. The main focus of the book is Ishamels experience during the civil war in Sierra Leone and how it completely changes his life. After reading this book so far it is good. It started of a little slow but after the first 10 pages or so it picked up really quick.

    1. i agree with you i have the same connection with night i love how all of these books are based off a true story by the person who experienced all of these things and it does make it way more interesting

    2. I feel the same way about my book Night. Knowing that it is a true story adds way more depth to it and you feel it a bit more knowing that people actually endured these tragic things. let alone having the strength to recount the stories and put them in a book.

    3. I agree with you, the fact that it is a true story makes you really feel for Ishmael as he is sharing his story. The book really did pick up quick after about the first chapter.

    4. Your book seems somewhat similar to my book, Night be Elie Wiesel. Night is about Elie's experiences during the Holocaust and the atrocities that took place. I also chose my book because it's a real story, and I also find a lot of interest in history.

    5. I agree, the fact that it’s a true story makes it way more interesting and real. After the beginning, it definitely picks up and gets more intense as you see how the war starts to change Ishmael. It makes you want to keep reading because you know everything actually happened.

    6. Both books are true stories about kids whose lives are destroyed by violence. Ishmael faces war in Sierra Leone, and Elie faces the Holocaust. They both lose their childhood fast and have to survive horrible things. Night connects to A Long Way Gone because they both teach real history and show how strong people can be.

  5. what really attracted me to this novel is that it was a real life story from Elie Wiesel about his experiences during the holocaust and that he is a survivor of it. the primary focus in my book is Elies life during the holocaust i haven't made it to far into the book yet to know how he is handling the situation yet. I do know that right when he seen the horrible things that happened at Auschwitz he started to lose his strong faith in god. my initial thoughts on this book are i think its going to be very good it jumps right in to the story he arrived at Auschwitz within 30 pages of the book.

    3. Both Night and A Long Way Gone are true stories about boys whose lives are destroyed by violence. Elie loses his faith at Auschwitz just like Ishmael loses his childhood in the war. Both of them are forced to grow up fast and survive things no kid should face. That’s why Night connects to A Long Way Gone—they both show real history and real trauma.

  6. In my book A Long Way Gone what attracted me most was that it is about war. I have enjoyed other books that are about war so when this book was an option I knew I wanted to read it. The main focus in this book is Ishmael trying to survive this war while being hunted down by the Rebels. Ishmael and his friends sticking together is helping them get through this, without each other they would be lost. After reading the first few chapters I was hooked, Ishmael being on the run is very fun and interesting to read. The first chapter was slow but immediately picked up after the Rebels come to there town.

    1. I agree, once the rebels show up the book gets way more intense and interesting. Watching Ishmael and his friends try to survive together makes it even better to read. It definitely hooks you fast after that slow start.

    2. I am reading night and it kind of relates to yours because my character is also trying to survive in the camps he was forced to be at.

    3. I couldn't agree more. The rebels showing up is definitely the turning point. Where the story goes from seemingly normal, to suddenly intense. I also agree that it is interesting to hear about what had to be done to survive while he was on the run as well as hearing about how his experiences in the villages he went through differed.

    4. This is similar to my book The Kite Runner, the main character Amir, is trying to survive war times with his best friend Hassan. Similar to your books main character Ishmael. It is pretty cool to see authors using this type of structure in order to add a a layer of suspense and or drama to keep their readers hooked on the story.

  7. I have the book A Thousand Splendid Suns. This was my first choice because it seemed the most interesting because it was about a young girl's life who gets married to an older man with multiple wives, and the other books were not as interesting compared to this one. After I started to read I really was not interested in the book because there are a few fast parts, but the rest seemed very slow, and some of the words are confusing because they are in a different language. I also do not agree with the situations Mariam the main character is put into. The book is primarily about Mariam in the first part and her family situation, and getting married off at 15. She handed the bad things in her life well, but I wish she did not have to. I briefly started part two which is about a nine year old named Laila. She also has a bad family in the fact her parents are fighting and she deals with that the best she can.

    1. I agree with your statement that to me, a Thousand Splendid Suns sounded more interesting than any of the other books. I think that there are definetly slow parts to this book that make it hard to keep reading and the language makes me lost in the book, I also feel like even when I am not agreeing with the treatment like you said, there is some part of the anger that it brings me that continues to draw me back in. I am wondering if Laila's family is "bad" or has just had to face hard times that have created a divide between the parents.

  8. So far in my book The Kite Runner, it has been relatively slow in the beginning but it is starting to finally pick up now. They introduced the main characters and gave some background on their past. The main characters have had little happen to them so far. In my book it is mostly men a part of the story due to the lack of power shown by women in the middle-east.

    1. As I am reading the same book as you, I agree that the story starts out on the slower end. As the book progresses though, the story does as well, and it describes in detail the hardships the characters of the book experience. I also agree that the story is mostly male-dominated due to them lacking power in middle-eastern countries, and that makes this book in particular a unique read as well. I also think that the narrator's mother dying when they were born plays a role in why women aren't brought up much due to Amir (The Narrator) feeling responsible for his mother's death.

    2. I thought Night was going to be a boring book at first because it started off talking about Jewish studies but I had no idea how fast the story would pick up. It's all about getting over that hump of the introduction then the plot will start to thicken.

  9. I'm not sure if much attracted me to the novel The Kite Runner because it was my third choice. I'm not mad about it though because the book isn't too bad. So far in the book the primary focus is friendship between the main character Amir and his servant Hassan who is also his friend. I think this will continue throughout the book because it has been the theme through the first 100 pages. At first it was tough to get reading because it was introducing the characters and giving background about them. It has gotten better to read and i think it will continue to get better.

  10. The book I chose is Night by Elie Wiesel. What attracted me to the book the most is my passion for history, specifically from the 1910s-early/late 70s. WW2 and the Holocaust specifically are what I have most interest in, and getting the opportunity to learn about it more directly from someone who witnessed and was apart of one of, if not the biggest genocides in history is what drew me to the book the most. The book is primarily about a person named Elie Wiesel, he is a Holocaust survivor and he shares his point of view during the entire war/Holocaust. The characters so far seem to be handling everything very well. The amount of hope that these individuals have is inspiring, especially when they're going through the absolute worst.

  11. I chose to read Night because it’s a true story, and that makes it feel important and real. The book focuses on how Elie’s normal life in Sighet is slowly taken away as the Nazis move in and start controlling everything. Elie and his family try to stay hopeful, but you can feel the fear growing, especially when Moishe the Beadle tries to warn everyone. After the first few chapters, my first impression is that the book jumps right into the tension instead of starting slow. It pulls you in fast and makes you want to keep reading to understand what Elie goes through.

    1. I agree with you, the book really hooked me because it's a true story and I love learning about history, especially war. The book went right into the horror that unfolded, which serves as a great hook but also is an eye opener to what Jewish people truly went through during the Holocaust.

    2. I couldn't agree more even though I have never read the book "Night" in it's entirety. I say this since back in sophomore year, we read snippets taken from "Night " about Elie's story and shows examples of the true horror of the holocaust. The one snippet we read in particular described in detail how Nazi soldiers executed their victims. It was extremely disturbing and unsetting, and directly connects to what you have described in your comment.

  12. Im reading Night, what really drew me in is that it's about the Holocaust. I'm really a history junky so i like reading about stuff that happened in the 1900's. The primary focus is about a young boys point of view going through the Holocaust. The first few chapters is about his life right at the start of the war, and then moves into his first concentration camp, which happened to be Auschwitz. My first impression is good. I like how it is from his POV, and that it is all in great detail since he is a survivor. The book really jumps right into the action. Whitin the first few pages they are already being put into the ghetto's, which was the holding place of the jews before the camps. I'm very excited for the rest of the book.

  13. I did not get to choose what book I read due to being gone when we initially received our books, but I am currently reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. So far, this book was been an extremely unique read due to the culture surrounding the topics brought up in the book. As the reader, you get to learn about the life of Amir, a young boy growing up in Afghanistan. His best friend is named Hassan, and he competes in Kite-Running competitions with him, which is how the book gets it's name. The book starts out at a slower pace, but quickly picks up as you continue reading. It is an extremely interesting read that really takes a deep-dive into the afghanistan culture, and I am extremely excited to keep reading it.

  14. I was attracted to A Long Way Gone because it’s based on a true story and shows what war is really like, which made it seem more interesting than a normal book. The main focus is on survival during a civil war, and Ishmael has to deal with losing his family and constantly running for safety. So far, the book kind of jumps right in. 6. I'm also reading A Long Way Gone, and I agree, the survival aspect of the book is very intriguing. It's something I feel you don't hear much about in most war stories. On top of that, wars like this in Africa are rarely discussed in the mainstream. Combine those two things, and I agree that you have the potential for quite the story.

  15. I chose to read "Night" by Elie Wiesel, where the author is telling us his experience of the holocaust as a 15 year old Jewish boy. My first impression was that the book was boring but being that the book is short, it is very fast paced and by the time the first chapter was over, the family was already on their way to Auschwitz. It was weird seeing how fast the Jews were stripped of their citizenship day by day, from having to wear stars on their clothing to symbolize that they were Jewish to losing their homes to being deported all withtin the first 30 pages.

    2. "I Am Malala" started off pretty boring, too, but she immediately jumps into the horrors of the Taliban a few chapters in. "Night" sounded so interesting to me. I would have read it, but I wanted a longer book, and I knew "Night" was pretty short. Mrs. Broadbent said it was short but a hard read, which only made it sound more interesting. Writing a short story and making it good and interesting sounds difficult. Elie Wiesel was talented.

    3. Night and I am Malala are kind of similar. My book also started off slow/boring, but i think it will be more useful as the book goes on. There is also a lot of horrible things happening to Malala with the taliban, eathquake, etc, like Elie is going through with being at the Auschwitz.

    4. both of them start off pretty slow, and i believe it is to make the reader familiar with what the character's version of normal is. if the books were to jump straight into hellfire we wouldn't have anything to compare it to other than our own experiences.

    5. I agree. To me the book has gotten off to a bit of a slow start but it has really picked up as it goes on. I do think and hope the book gets a little bit more interesting as it goes on. It is on the shorter end though so it has to pick it up a little.

  18. I chose I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb. It centers around Malala's life as a girl in school in Pakistan under the militaristic rule of the Taliban, which heavily speaks against girls attending schools. Malala's response to this is speaking out against the Taliban along with her father, who also passionately advocates for education. Malala doesn't seem to hide the fact that she was nervous, because she was just a little girl doing interviews and speaking out against the Taliban, but she was brave. The book started out pretty slow, in my opinion. We learn a lot about Malala and the history of Swat as well as Pakistan. While I find that interesting, it still felt pretty slow. However, a few more chapters in and we are seeing and learning a lot more about the Taliban and how Malala reacts. What attracted me to I Am Malala was mostly because I had obviously heard of Malala many times before. I don't typically follow activists, but I have always followed Malala because even though I have never gone through anything she has, or any of the girls in Pakistan, I find her very inspiring. I find it incredible how she managed to survive being shot by a Taliban member, and I wanted to know more. I've always wanted to read this book, but I never got around to it.

    2. putting such heavy activist pressure on the shoulders of a little kid would be a huge struggle for any child. what to do and say when constantly under the eyes of the press when to speak her childish developing mind and when she would need to sound like an adult in a child's body, speaking on adult issues. i wonder if the book goes on to talk about that kind of pressure and how she handled it.

  22. I chose The Kite Runner because it is the story I felt I could understand the most. The storyline that I imagined in my head also seemed pretty easy to follow when I was reading the blurb about the book. The primary focus of The Kite Runner in my opinion is learning about another culture along with the hardships they face, especially throughout a war. The main character of my novel, Amir, is kind of confusing to me. I feel like he wants to do the right thing but doesn’t know how to go about it and he doesn’t have the confidence to carry out his actions. After reading what I have so far, my initial thoughts of this book are that I like it, but it can be hard to follow sometimes and I will have to flip back and forth every once in a while to get myself back on track.

  23. I chose the book The Kite runner because I thought it sounded the best when I first picked it up. I also thought the story line was interesting as well. The primary focus is based off the life of Amir, Baba (his dad) and their servant's and how they have to move to America for a better and safter life. It also tells us about each person and how they connect with the other people in the story. The characters are dealing with this situation but as it continues to go on things start to get harder and much more difficult. The first couple of chapters are a little rough/confusing. It was hard to understand all the characters at first because they dump it all on you at once. But as the book goes on it starts to get easier to understand who is who and the main idea of the story. Overall my first chapters were my least favorite thing about the book and I didn't know whether or not.

  24. I chose the book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" because it is a very different book about young girls being married off to older men. The primary focus of the novel so far seems to be on the life of Mariam and the struggles she faces growing up. You can see themes of family and hardship especially with how she is treated as an illegitimate child and how that affects her relationship with her parents. The situation she is in is difficult and she handles it by being quiet and obedient, even though she feels hurt and confused about her place in the world. I was kind of bored and struggled to understand what was going on in the beginning of the book and learn the names of places and people.

    1. I also put a similar primary focus. Mariam is having an awful life growing up, not only due to the miscarriages but also the abuse from Rasheed.

  25. This book drew me in as the introduction said that it focused on the girls point of view and their difference in treatment to women as well as different marriage norms in Afghanastan. This book also seemed interesting as I am as familiar with Afghanastan as I am with WWII, or Malala's situation. So far, this book has focused in on family dynamics of Miriam with her dad then marrying her off to a much older stranger, and then her moving in with him. After Miriam, they moved to Layla's perspective. Layla is a young girl whose father highly values education and does not feel as though he needs to marry her off. This character is at a very different point in her life than Miriam is, and her family has very different morals and intentions which has made the book more interesting. So far I have liked the book, but it is also a little bit slow for me, I would not say that it is one of my favorites however, there have been parts that have simultaneously grabbed my attention and have been hard to read. Overall it is not my favorite book, but it is not a bad read either.

    1. I am also reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns. I agree with your opinion on that the book is slow, and that it is overall not your favorite book. In certain parts like when Mariam talks about her disgust towards Rasheed the book seems to go a little faster, but hopefully it speeds up in the next part.

  26. When I started reading I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, I was really interested because it’s a real story about a young girl who risked her life to stand up for education. The main focus of the book is on the importance of education, especially for girls, and the challenges Malala faced growing up in Pakistan under the Taliban rule. She handles these situations with a lot of courage and determination as she is continuing to speak out even when it’s unsafe. The beginning of the book is a little slower because it gives background about her family and culture, but it helps you better understand everything that happens later. Overall, my first impression of the book is very intriging and eye-opening

  27. I chose the book Night, i was interested in this book because it seemed fast paced and had a lot going on. The main focus in this book is what the son is doing and his dad, it mainly talks about their day to day life and how everything is moving. they are handling their situation calmly, they listen to their orders. This book goes almost straight into the main plot which i liked a lot because it keeps me reading the book.

  28. What attracted me in the book night was the wild stuff that was going on and i wanted to see what was going to happen next. Is he going to stay with his father and what is going to happen to them. the primary focus is about the jews in the concentration camps and the people in the book are not handling it well, they are being starved and are being broken down. After reading the first few chapters i think the book is good but it can be brutal at times hearing what Elie and the other jews had to go through.

  29. I'm reading A Long Way Gone. I was drawn to the story after the readings about the different books/authors in class. The firsthand account of a kid that got forced into fighting in a bloody civil war sounds thrilling. I haven't felt that way about this book for a while. The story follows Ishmael Beah as he recounts what it was like being in Sierra Leone during a civil war. He talks about having to flee from village to village as well as some very intense encounters with rebels. Yet for the life of me, I cannot bring myself to want to read this book. He gets pretty straight into the action, but it just feels...underwhelming. Oh well. Maybe it'll get better.

  30. I picked A Long Way Gone because it’s a true story about a kid going through war which makes it really interesting and serious. The main focus of the book is survival during the war and how it affects Ishmael’s life. He deals with it by trying to stay alive, sticking with his friends, and keeping going even when things get really hard. After reading the first few chapters, I think the book jumps right into the action instead of being slow. It shows danger right away, which makes it easy to get into. My first impression is that it’s a sad but really interesting story

  31. I am reading the book a thousand splendid suns and after reading the first part of this book I first found it very slow and boarding but later on it the book it gets more interesting and emotional and it includes one of the main characters Mariam going through an arranged marriage and having a lot of miscarriages one of the main reasons why I picked this book was because I thought it sounded really interesting but I’m also a girl so I felt like I could relate and understand it more than k could with a book that’s in a males perspective

  32. I am reading Night. I chose this book because it sounded really interesting and a good read. The primary focus in this book is the perspective of a 15 year old boy living in a concentration camp and his journey along the way. The main characters are handling this pretty well so far. The mom and sister were killed right away on arrival day but the father and son are handling it well thus far. Night is only 120 pages long so it jumps right into action and does not waste anytime. I do like it so far and it is very interesting.

  33. I chose I am Malala because it tells a powerful true story about courage, education, and standing up for what you believe in. Through Malala’s experiences growing up in Pakistan, you get a personal look at how difficult life can be under strict rules that limit freedom, especially for girls. What makes the book especially interesting is how Malala shares both her fears and her determination, showing that even a young person can make a global impact. Her story is inspiring because it highlights the importance of standing up for what you believe in.

    1. At night the Elle also doesn't have freedom similarly to Malala, because their groups are being oppressed. Elle also talks about his fear because of what is going on around him, one difference is Elle doesn't have the opportunity to make a change because hes in a concentration camp but he still doesn't give up

  34. This novel got my attention because of my interest in World War II and the Holocaust, and i really wanted a deeper understanding by seeing the perspective of a 15 year old jewish boy who went through this. The primary focus is pretty much survival for Ellie, the main character he is placed in Auschwitz the concentration camp and he goes from camp to camp with his father and death is always close because of his situation. He starts to lose faith in god as a result of his situation and he is becoming desensitized to the horrors going on around him and becoming emotionally numb. The beginning of the book isn't bad it just talks about some background info of his life and village and then the Germans show up and start taking some of their privileges away until they are taken to the camps. It does jump right into the conflict pretty early, the book is rather short.

  35. the book i choose was A long way gone. in the book the primary focus is on Ishmael a 12 year old boy who is navagating a war in his home country of Sierra Leone. you could say that the book started slow as we were introduced to ishmaels life growing but then it picks up after the rebels show up

  36. I really thought this novel, Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, would surprise me. I really like war. The Soviet invasion was very interesting to me during History class. It was cool learning about the characters, especially Mariam and Rasheed's relationship. However, for Mariam, it didn't go very well for her life after several miscarriages due to Rasheed abusing her. The primary focus of this novel is survival and the sacrifices women make. Both Mariam and Laila endure abuse, especially when the bomb comes down and strikes Laila's home, killing both her parents. Mariam and Rasheed save Laila. After reading the first few chapters, I think this book is good. It isn't fully drawing me in yet, but because of the events that are happening now, I think it will start to get good.

    1. I agree that A thousand Splendid suns has a really interesting background, taking place during the cold war and the beginning of the taliban's reign over afgahnistan. its also really interesting seeing how the characters interact and find hope in eachother despite their unique backgrounds

    2. I get that, the darker books definitely stick with you more. A Thousand Splendid Suns is a good pick though, it hits hard early and keeps getting deeper. I’ve heard A Long Way Gone is really intense too, so you probably would’ve liked that one as well.

  37. I didnt get to pick my book this time because i was absent but I'm overall interested in all of the novel choices, more so the darker ones because they tend to be more complex and memorable. if i got the chance to choose a would have picked A Long Way Gone based on the summary alone but I'm really happy with the book A Thousand Splendid Suns so far, its hard hitting right off the bat and its alot deeper than the summary initially let on

  38. I chose A Thousand Splendid Suns because it gives a different perspective through female characters and shows what life was like in a much different time and place. At first it can feel slow and a little confusing, but as the story goes on you start to understand the characters more and why they act the way they do. The book really focuses on things like arranged marriages, war, and how tough life can be, especially for women. Even though it’s not always exciting, it has some strong moments that make it worth reading.

  39. The way i ended up with my book the kite runner was because i was not at school and my first impression is not the best. this is because it is a really hard book to get into with a really slow start and a very boring descriptive writing style, I'm sure it will get better but those are my first initial thoughts on the book after a while I got into the book and enjoyed reading it
