  1. Of the three books Night, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes my favorite book was Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes. I liked that book the most because I liked seeing the relationship between Sarah and Eric, and how Eric always stood up for Sarah and maintained a friendship throughout middle and high school. The book also was very fast paced and there was always something happening with either of the main characters. The books A Thousand Splendid Suns and Night both deal with abuse which was obviously hard to read about, but the book that was probably my least favorite was A Thousand Splendid Suns because it was a slow paced book. Also it was hard to see Mariam and Laila attempt to escape and fail, and them having to take Aziza to the orphanage. I did like the ending though when Mariam killed Rasheed and Laila, Tariq, and the kids got to live a happy life, but I was sad Mariam didn't get to have the same experience with the rest of her life.

  2. I would say that running loose is for sure my favorite book just due to the fact that there is so much suspense and you never knew what was going to happen and I enjoyed reading about all the obstacles he had to overcome and I just never seen Becky dying. I really enjoyed the character in the book and how he handled all of his situations and how he didnt back down from anyone and how mentally tough he was. My least favorite book I have read is the on that im reading right now because there is no suspense and it is told from one persons point of view. This class has been awesome Mrs. Broadbent and I really enjoyed having you as a teacher I hope retirement treats you very well its been an honor to come to class everyday and be your student thanks for pushing me to be better each day.

  3. My favorite book from this trimester was I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai. I heard a few people describe this book as really boring. At first, yeah, it did drag on, but I think if you look at the bigger picture, you'll love it. My favorite part of the book was the conflicts and how Malala dealt with them, how she pushed through such life-altering situations. It was one of the most inspiring books I have ever read. It opened me up to more culture, different experiences, and gave me a deeper understanding of the girl who was shot by the Taliban. It made me see her beyond that shooting. I got to see more of her vulnerable moments, her strong moments, and her activism. I also got to hear more about her culture, religion, and the pride in her home in Swat. It is really hard for me to pick my least favorite since I loved every book I read this trimester. If I had to pick, my least favorite would be Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher. I loved the book and the characters, but I was not a fan of the smaller elements. They are petty, but I felt like the dialogue was hard to get through because everyone seemed to talk almost the same way. But also, the witty jokes from Eric got annoying really fast. I also would have changed more about the ending of the book, since I wished Sarah had been expanded on just a little more in the end.

  5. my favorite book so far was the one im reading right now (The House Of My Mother). i like this book because there is a documentary to it as well. the book tells more about the story and how the kids were treated on a daily basis. i really like that it gives more details and how the book is set up telling us a readers their entire life story from how the parents met to how it all ends.

  6. Although I enjoyed every book I read this trimester, I think the book I enjoyed the most was my last book, Return with Honor by Scott O'Grady. The book overall was amazing, and taught me a lot about what it means to have grit and a positive mindset. Throughout the entire 6 days that Scott was stranded in Bosnia, he kept a positive mindset even though his life was at risk every second he was there. The book also is about a topic that I am heavily interested in, learning more about the Air Force and how NATO works is interesting. The book also taught me about teamwork even though this was on a much larger scale. The fact that U.S. was able to find Scott and assemble an entire package to go get him in just 6 days is unbelievable. It truly shows that if you work together well enough with other people, you can achieve something great.

  7. My favorite book of this trimester was "Ignite Your Grit" by Andrew Carbajal. I say this since it provided me with many different ways in which I can use Grit to overcome the many obstacles in life we are presented with. I give him kudos for being willing to write about his time being deployed in Iraq as well. I couldn't even imagine how hard it would be to write about an experience as traumatic as that. Alongside this, although I enjoyed some of the other books we read this trimester, I feel like this one provided me with life lessons that I will/can actually use in the future to better myself. The big thing I think of is this upcoming summer prep for my very first year of college XC. I am both excited and nervous at the same time, and I know that grit will play a huge role in determining how I perform this upcoming season. Grit empowers people, and that is the life lesson reading this book taught me. Reading this book was probably one of the best decisions I made while taking this class, and I most definitely think the decision to read it will help me with my future goals as well.

  8. Out of the three books I read this trimester, my favorite was Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. It was my favorite because the plot always kept me interested and there was constantly action and suspense. I also liked the characters, especially Katniss and Peeta, because they felt realistic and had to deal with difficult choices. The themes of survival, rebellion, and sacrifice made the story deeper than just an action book. One of the most memorable parts was the Quarter Quell arena and all of the dangerous traps inside it. My least favorite book was A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. I thought the story was powerful and had an important message about war and survival, but some parts felt slower and harder to stay focused on. Even though it was not my favorite, it still gave a good perspective on what life was like during the civil war in Sierra Leone and showed how much war can affect people, especially children.

  9. My favorite book i read this tri was Night by Elie Wiesel. This was my favorite book for a couple of reasons. The main reason was because of the plot. There were barely any slow parts of the books and helped me stay engaged in the book. I like the characters in the book and how Elie and his father stuck together until the very end. Even when Elie felt like leaving him to raise his chances of survival he did not because it was the only family he had left. I also enjoyed this book because i think the holocaust is a very interesting topic. My least favorite book was The Kite Runner. to me this book was very boring and hard to read. I feel like it was pretty slow and hard to keep reading without getting bored.

  10. Out of the three book I read this trimester i would say A long way gone was my favorite. I like it the best because Ishmael Beah was a young kid facing a very hard time. Ishmael faced hard times like seeing death, starvation, and plenty more. There were many different plots in this book because Ishmael was always on the run trying to stay safe. He built a lot of good friend ships throughout is adventure. My least favorite was Running Loose, this book was just kind of slow and not a crazy amount of action. I didn't like how the author would always talk about boomer and not Louie.

  11. Of the three books I read I would say that Running Loose was my favorite simply because of how relateable The main character Louie Banks is. Also I admired how he stood up for what he believed in and took the consequences to the chin. He chose between his morals and the norm. Also he shows his ability to overcome adversity after his girlfriend died.

  12. Of the three books I read, Stotan!, The Kite Runner, and The Court of Frost and Starlight, I think my favorite was probably The Kite Runner. It was a very interesting, serious, and informative book. I obviously thought my favorite would have been my choice book but it ended up not being good and was probably my least favorite out of all of them, it moved very slow and did not make me want to keep reading. The Kite Runner offered a lot of information, and it was told in a very good way. I think my favorite thing about The Kite Runner was the conflicts that were presented.

  13. out of the three books i read this trimester my favorite book was Night by Elie Weisel. it was my favorite book because i found it very interesting and it was short and easy to read. i liked how he talked about how he overcame the conflicts and what he did to survive. my lwast favorite book was running loose. it was difficult to read at the beginning because it was slow.

  15. Of the three books we read this trimester, my favorite was The Kite Runner. I liked this book the most because the story was very interesting. It kept my attention the whole time, and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. The book had good characters and a good story line that made it different from the other books I have read. One reason I liked the book was because of the characters, especially Amir and Hassan. Their friendship was complicated and delt with some drama and it changed a lot throughout the story. Hassan was one of my favorite characters because he was loyal and kind, even when people treated him badly. Amir made many mistakes, but I liked how the book showed his guilt and how he tried to become a better person later in life. The friendships, betrayal, and forgiveness made the book easier to read and more interesting. One theme that i seen in the book was redemption. Amir spends many years feeling guilty for what happened to Hassan, and the story shows how he tries to make things right. My least favorite book was probably Elephant Run. Even though it had action I did not fully understand what was going on with the characters and parts of the story felt slower to me. However, I still thought it was a good book. Overall, I enjoyed this class and the books we read this trimester. The stories were all different in their own ways and helped give me more of an understanding of what books I like.

  16. Out of the three books we have read this trimester, my personal favorite was Chinese Handcuffs. I liked how there was a consistent feeling of tension throughout the entire book; this is what kept my attention hooked and fueled my enjoyment to continue reading. I thought the main characters were pretty good, and the book did a good job with their backstories and their development throughout the entire story. One example reallythat hooked me early on in the book is the part with Preston, Dillon, and the cat. It was just such a messed-up act they committed together that made me want to not read but also see what their relationship was like and what type of people they grew up to be. My least favorite book was probably Never Caught. The beginning was boring and felt like a summary instead of a story; it was like reading a documentary. While I did enjoy the book and found it very interesting, there were just so many random things mentioned, and the plot seemed to go off topic a lot; it was just overall underwhelming compared to the other books i read. I would place Night at the top; it was a good read, but I don't specifically like reading books about the Holocaust. Nevertheless, it was very well written. All in all, the books that I read this trimester were all good in their own ways, and I enjoyed reading them and would definitely recommend them to others.

  17. Out of the three book i read, The Teacher by Freida McFadden was my favorite. I have read many of her books and every time i finish one i am left with such a shock. Her books are so well-written and I love all the different mysterious vibes she puts into all of them. I can hardly put her books down once i start reading. In this book, I really liked how there was a lot going on but I never got confused. She sets up her chapters pretty short and with a specific narrator for every one so you never get confused on whos talking which is very nice. Overall, I love how no matter what, you can get instanly hooked into any of her books and this one specifically always had me on my toes. I can say i was never bored while reading this book. My least favorite book I would say was Chinese Handcuffs. I liked the storyline, i think it was very meaningful and had many relatable situations. I just did not get to choose that book so i think that was why i did not enjoy it as much as the other two.

  18. My favorite book this trimester was Night by Elie Wiesel because it was emotional, and kept my attention the whole time. I liked how the book showed Elie’s relationship with his father and the struggles they went through during the holocaust. The conflicts and themes about survival and faith made the story really meaningful and interesting to read. My least favorite book was Stotan! because I didn’t connect with the characters as much and some parts felt slow. Even though it had good themes about teamwork and determination, it wasn’t as interesting as Night.

  19. Out of the three books I read this trimester, my favorite was Woodlawn. I liked it because it was inspiring and based on a true story. I also liked the football parts and how the team learned to work together even during racism and conflict. Tony Nathan was my favorite character because he worked hard and never gave up. My least favorite book was Stotan! we read because it was not as interesting and did not keep my attention as much as Woodlawn.

  20. Of the 3 books i read, i think Night was the best one. I like reading about the Holocaust and everything the people did to survive. I like how some of the people where always determined to get out alive and their will to live. My least favorite was Somewhere in the Darkness, it wasn't very interesting and the plot wasn't the greatest.

  21. i would say my favorite book that i read this trimester would be night by Elie Wiesel. I liked how it was a faster pace book and the suspense of wondering what is going to happen next which kept me hooked. I enjoy the holocaust books or books where someones fighting for survival. Elie describes the scenes so well i could visualize them. i Would say my least favorite book i read was chinese handcuffs, the storyline was good but i wasnt too hooked on it and it was kinda slow. i also didnt like how it just always jumped and changes topics or different points of views randomly.

  22. My favorite book from this class was By the Time You Read This, I’ll Be Dead because it was emotional, realistic, and kept me interested the whole time. I liked the characters, especially Daelyn, because her struggles with bullying and loneliness felt real and made me feel bad for her. The plot was also really interesting because I wanted to know if she would change her mind and find hope. I also liked the themes about mental health, bullying, and how important it is to have people who care about you. The conflicts in the story made it powerful because most of them were internal, showing Daelyn’s battle with herself. My least favorite part was how sad and heavy some scenes were, but overall that is also what made the book so memorable.

  23. My favorite book out of the three I have read this trimester has to be A Long Way Gone because of all the constant action and how much I got to learn. From the first twenty pages I really liked it because it was constant action with very good details. The conflict of this book is what made it so good, a twelve year having to fight in a war to stay alive doing drugs and losing his entire family was not what I expected from the book. It was nothing like I've ever read before and the fact it was a true story being told by the main character made it feel really real to read.

  24. My favorite book of the trimester was probably The Road, because it had been on my to-read list for a really long time and i knew that oi would like it alot just like other classic novels I've read. I will admit that it was difficult to have a discussion with it because of the plot and way that the story was written but i still think it was the best book i read this trimester

  25. My favorite book this trimester was probably Chinese Handcuffs. I liked this book because it talked about grief and something that everybody goes through at some point. Dillon would right letting as a coping skill to get over his brothers loss. My least favorite book was probably We Were Liars because it seemed pretty boring and not very much has happened.

  27. Be Not Far From Me was my favorite book this trimester because it pulled me in the fastest and kept me hooked the whole time. I liked how the story threw Ashley straight into survival mode after she gets lost in the Smokies, and the tension never really lets up. The plot intensity made it feel like I was right there with her limping through the woods, dealing with pain, hunger, and fear. Ashley herself was a big reason I liked it so much she’s stubborn, tough, and messy in a way that feels real, and watching her fight through everything made the book way more emotional. The conflicts weren’t just about nature trying to kill her, but also about her facing her past, her mistakes, and the people she trusted. The whole story had a high interest level because something intense was always happening, and the survival details were gritty enough to keep me turning pages. Out of all three books, this one grabbed me the hardest and stayed in my head the longest.

  28. Out of the three books I read this trimester, my favorite was A Long Way Gone because it was the most interesting and emotional story. I liked how Ishmael Beah shared his real experiences as a child soldier during the Sierra Leone Civil War, which made the book feel powerful and realistic. The plot kept me interested because there were many conflicts, like surviving the war, losing his family, and trying to rebuild his life. One specific example I found memorable was when Ishmael was rescued and taken to the rehabilitation center, because it showed that people can recover even after terrible experiences.

  29. Overall, out of the three books, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Chinese Handcuffs, and The Haunting, I think that The Haunting has stuck with me the most. Of course, being my own pick, I would hope it will be the best. I really like horror or mystery books; they give great suspense. I think Natasha Preston uses vivid imagery to make the novel memorable, and the dark setting makes the story even more mischievous. I think that it was the best because of the mystery. They couldn't find out who the murderer was; many believed it was something or someone related to Nash due to his father being a previous serial killer. I cannot spoil the killer because then you wouldn't have to read the book. I really think the characters she puts in this book are great as well. Penny is intelligent, curious, emotional, and much braver than she first appears. By the end of the story, Penny isn't shy anymore and begins to investigate the mystery herself. The next character is Nash. Nash is Penny's ex, but she still has major feelings for him. The only thing about Nash is that his father was the Devil’s Night serial killer, so the entire town fears and judges him because of that. There are a few more characters, but they aren't the main ones. But overall, the mysterious plot is amazing and very worth reading. Overall, I think my least favorite was A Thousand Splendid Suns. This book gave too much description and background at the start of the book. It wasn't the worst book, but it was a questionable read.

  30. My favorite book was for sure The King in Yellow out of the three I read. It was of a much higher reading level than the other books that were of the optional choices. It was extremely dark and grim with death insanity with every turn of a page with a splash of that oh so intriguing cosmic horror that i would love to delve deeper into as a subject. The way i was able to take such a grim set of stories is due to their fantastical elements seperating them from more realistic books like the ones i read before. My least favorite i guarantee you was Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. i don't like sports not one bit other than playing them myself not competitively. and the plot felt extremely dramatized for something that's supposed to sound realistic.

  32. Out of the three books I read this trimester, If He Had Been with Me was my favorite. I liked it most because the story and characters felt very real and emotional. The relationship between Autumn and Finn kept me interested because even though they grew apart it was obvious they still cared about each other. The plot was interesting because there was always drama and tension building throughout the story especially near the ending. I also liked the themes of love, regret, and missed opportunities because they made the book more meaningful. The characters were one of the best parts of the novel because they felt realistic and relatable. Autumn changed a lot throughout the story as she struggled with friendships, relationships, and figuring out who she wanted to be. The conflicts also felt believable because they were based on emotions and personal choices instead of unrealistic situations. The ending was heartbreaking, but it made the book memorable and powerful. My least favorite book was Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes because I did not connect to it as much as the others. Even though the book had important themes and serious conflicts it was harder for me to stay interested in the story. Some parts felt slower and I was not as emotionally attached to the characters.

  33. The Grand Escape was one of my favorite books because of its suspenseful plot and exciting escape story. I liked how the prisoners worked together and risked everything to escape the camp during World War I. One memorable part was when they secretly dug the tunnel and finally escaped into the night. My least favorite one was the first book stotan week i did not like it that much and it was very hard to read. Thank you for having me this try I really enjoyed this class.

  35. of all the three books ive read id have to say my favorite was Fahrenheit 451 because mostly its plot and one character in particular, the plot is so strange with how real it could be and its rule system of how everything is now all gloomy and strict and just everyone being so brainwashed in this belief that everything is ok and is right nobody's goanna try and stop it or protest there just, "welp this is life" and the other fact i loved was the character in the beginning Clarisse which was a ray of hope for the main character that i could feel for and felt so bad for, she got killed off so quickly and was like the main characters hope in regaining his mentality because of how kind she was to him, it really shows how sad the part of there lives are and how one beacon of hope is all Montag needed but she dies and i felt so bad. and my least favorite book would have to be Chinese handcuffs mostly because of the plot it was sad but i got bored of it after a little while and the ending was a little bland everything about it was bland thats my reasoning

  36. My favorite book that I have read between Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, The Way I Used to be, and A thousand Splendid Suns was Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. I really enjoyed most of the characters and the ones that I didn't enjoy I still had strong feelings for that kept me reading. I feel like the plot line kept me interested the whole time and kept me wanting to read where as the other books somewhat kept my interest but also lost it part of the way through. My least favorite was a Thousand Splendid Suns because I felt very strong dislike towards many of the characters rather than an even ratio of like and dislike. This was still a great book just not my favorite.

  37. Between Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, A Long Way Gone, and The Silence of the Lambs, my favorite was definitely The Silence of the Lambs. The storyline was the most intriguing (it's hard for something so dark to not be interesting), and the characters were all so vivid, almost real. Even someone that is as much of a caricature as Dr. Hannibal Lecter was made to feel real (possibly due to the fact that he was based on a real inmate that Thomas Harris had met). The book's pacing was on point, as it never felt like it moved so slow that I got bored, and never so fast that I'd get confused. The eerie and unsettling tone throughout the whole book also made the experience that much more enjoyable. My least favorite was A Long Way Gone, and it's not even close. The whole book dragged on, which was unexpected, as it's about a boy that spent a good portion of his life brutally killing people and getting insanely high. Such a storyline was not enough for A Long Way Gone however, and Ishmael Beah's pacing was absolutely dreadful. Not to mention, he wasn't even great at describing most things. He could describe some of the violent parts in memorable ways, but Thomas Harris was able to write mundane scenes in The Silence of the Lambs in ways that kept me engaged. Ishmael Beah could not.

  38. I read Staying fat for Sarah Byrnes, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and The Maze Runner. Out of all of them I think my favorite by far was the maze runner because it always pulled me into the book and even when i was not reading it had me thinking of what was going to happen next. The plot was great and the character development was my favorite seeing the main character Thomas go from somebody that didn't know anything to a person that knew everything how to get out of the maze and how confident he became as i was reading the book. My favorites were the maze runner and Staying fat for Sarah Byrnes, i didn't really enjoy my second book as much because it bored me most of the time and it was incredibly violent which again i didn't enjoy but otherwise they were all good books.

  39. Out of the three books I read this trimester, my favorite was Craig and Fred because it was emotional and based on a true story. I liked the relationship between Craig and Fred because it showed loyalty and friendship during difficult times in Afghanistan. The plot kept my attention, and the theme of companionship made the book meaningful. My least favorite book was the one that felt slower and less interesting. Compared to Craig and Fred, the characters and story were not as memorable or emotional.

    1. Out of all the books i read in English 4B, my favorite book i read was Running Loose by Chris Crutcher. This was my favorite book because of the theme and plot within the book. I also really enjoyed this book because it was about football. This book had so many emotions in it. From the main characters girlfriend dying to the coach wanting to injure the other teams star player because he was African American is just so much to take in. I really loved this book and would 100% read it again. I really enjoyed the build up of the book because the story truly came a long way. Even for the main character because he started off the book training for football and the book ended with him running track for the first time so the character development in this book was just phenomenal. I really enjoyed this class and i wont forget it!

    2. I like how you explained the different emotions and conflicts in Running Loose and why they made the story so interesting. The football aspect probably made it even easier to stay invested in the plot. The character development also sounds really strong because the main character changes a lot by the end of the book. I can relate because my favorite book, Night, also had a lot of emotional moments and major changes in the characters throughout the story.

  40. My favorite book this trimester was Night because it was the most emotional and interesting to me. I liked how real the story felt and how Elie Wiesel described everything in such detail that I could picture the events happening. The plot kept me interested because every chapter showed new struggles and hardships during the Holocaust. I also thought the theme was very powerful because it showed survival, loss, and how cruel people can be during war. One part that stood out to me was when Elie and his father were trying to survive together in the camps because it showed how strong their bond was even during terrible conditions.

My least favorite book was A Thousand Splendid Suns. I understood the message of the book and the struggles the characters went through, but some parts felt slow to me and it was harder for me to stay interested compared to Night.
